While in San Diego on Seal business, I twice took wrong turns on the unfamiliar freeways there. The first time, I looked up and saw a sign that said SEAWORLD DRIVE, and the shivers rolled down my spine. I suddenly realized I was 'this close' to where these enormous and sacred giants of the deep were being held captive their whole lives long.
| I quickly turned away and headed back to La Jolla, to the task at hand- Casa Beach, where jerky lifeguards make loud blaring requests over a loudspeaker, scaring the nursing seals and an unecessary halogen light out-shines the Moon all night long. But the second time I accidentally headed south on the same freeway, I took it as destiny, and followed the signs to Sea World San Diego. At the gat, I came to the window and met the very sweet Donnelda, who told me her mom had said the name was French-Canadian. I took the opportunity to find out that Sea World San Diego was a bit busy on a Monday because of spring break, but they are always pretty busy. They get 10,000 visitors a day, are open 7 days a week, charge $18.00 to park, $56.00 to enter the 'Amusement Park', and "Name all the Orcas Shamu". I told her I just wanted to go in for a moment to get a 'Shamu' sweatshirt and she let me park for free. |
